Two plus two equals four. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you put your finger in a beehive it’s probably going to get stung.. If potential criminals believe they’ll be punished, they’ll be less likely to commit crimes.
All four of the above involve basic common sense. But in all too many cities around the country, that fourth one seems to have willfully been forgotten.
Until recently Baltimore, Maryland was one of those cities. But not any more.
From Taylor Penley’s article for Fox News:
Baltimore sees staggering crime drop as Democratic prosecutor holds repeat offenders accountable
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates says the days of going easy on repeat offenders are over.
The Democratic prosecutor is promising accountability after years of violent crime in the city, crediting a tougher stance on gun crimes and repeat offenders for a sharp drop in homicides and shootings.
“We realized it’s about the victims,” Bates told “Fox & Friends” Wednesday, responding to questioning about soft-on-crime policies adopted by other Democratic prosecutors.
Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade contrasted Bates’ approach with that of progressive prosecutors in other areas, noting that some legal philosophies emphasize leniency toward marginalized communities in an effort to address systemic inequities.
“A number of the victims within the community were also minorities and African Americans, and they have a right to be safe and free in their house,” Bates said.
“We wanted to make sure that everybody, didn’t matter your race, didn’t matter where you’re from, everybody has a right to be safe, and it wasn’t a Democrat issue, it wasn’t a Republican issue, it was a people issue. At the end of the day, there were too many murders, too much violence, and we needed to make a change.”
You would think that this is the most basic common sense, wouldn’t you? Make it clear that criminals will pay a price for their actions, and potential criminals will think twice before committing criminal acts.
But in the lunatic asylum-quality purviews of DAs in some Democrat-dominated cities – including (but not restricted to) New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Minneapolis, Saint Louis and Philadelphia – common sense is turned on its head. Criminals get free passes, so they continue their criminality. And – surprise, surprise – the streets are less safe.
My congratulations to State’s Attorney Ivan Bates for seeing what is right in front of his eyes/acting accordingly/reaping the benefits for his city…
…and my disgust for his counterparts in those other cities for pretending that if you are nice to criminals they’ll be nice too.
They won’t be. And ordinary citizens will pay the price…a price that, frankly, they deserve if they keep electing the people who will NOT protect them.
