CHRIS MATTHEWS: HYPOCRITE, AMNESIAC, OR BOTH?

Ken Berwitz

Yesterday I put up, and laughed about, this ridiculous quote from Chris Matthews:

“Trump\’s now going back and calling Hillary Clinton an enabler. I\’ve never heard anybody say that about her. This is pretty personal, and I would think, over the line, that she\’s some kind of enabler…she was shocked by Monica, and I believe that story, that she had no idea something like that was going on in the White House. And she was hurt by it. People could see the hurt in her face that – what it had done to her. Why would this Trump guy go out and say that somehow she was in cahoots with this whole mess? I don\’t get that as even a reasonably honest statement…nobody I\’ve ever heard has ever said she was an enabler of Monica Lewinsky. It\’s beyond indecent, I think.”

Today I read Ann Coulter\’s latest column at townhall.com, and find that she has come up with a string of attacks on Hillary Clinton as an enabler, including as an enabler of Monica Lewinsky.

And guess who made them? (I suspect you already know the answer).

Here are just two from the collection:

“Hillary Clinton, first officer of the deck. There she is on with Katie Couric on the \’Today\’show sticking it to the right. \’This is a right-wing conspiracy. There is noMonica Lewinsky, there\’s a right-wing conspiracy.\’ What do you think of thatpolitical firepower?” — Chris Matthews, “Hardball,” June 16,1998 (interviewing one of Bill\’s many mistresses, Gennifer Flowers)

“In 1998, in January, onthat Matt Lauer interview on the \’Today\’ show, she didn\’t offer herself as acharacter witness. She offered herself as an alibi. She said, \’He didn\’t doit.\’ I\’m here — I\’m this guy\’s wife and I\’m telling you it didn\’t happen. … How can a woman, who\’s been betrayed by her husband so vividly, come back andoffer herself once again as a character witness? How can she swear to hischaracter if he betrayed her?” — Chris Matthews, “Hardball,”Sept. 18, 1998.

I\’m no fan of Ann Coulter\’s.  But when she\’s right, she\’s right.  And this column is a classic.

To call Chris Matthews a hypocritical Clinton butt-kisser doesn\’t do this justice.  But, sad to say, it is what I have come to expect from Matthews – a formerly worthwhile commentator who, like the iconic Mrs. Fletcher, has, integrity-wise, fallen so far and so hard that he can\’t get up.
