Carl DeMaio is a truly remarkable man.
At 13 years of age DeMaio\’s father abandons the family…two weeks before his mother dies. And if that were not enough, the children are not kept together, so he winds up with none of his loved ones.
That start in life, by itself, would have destroyed many people. But not Carl DeMaio. His answer was to put himself through Georgetown University, and then building two highly successful businesses, while becoming increasingly involved in politics.
What a great American success story! But it doesn\’t end there.
In 2008 Mr. DeMaio ran for, and won a seat on the San Diego City Council, where he spent four highly successful years. Then came an unsuccessful campaign to become the Republican candidate for Mayor of San Diego (unsuccessful for the voters too, since they elected Bob Filner – a serial lecher who had to resign in disgrace).
Now Mr. DeMaio is running in the Republican primary for the congressional seat currently held by Democrat Scott Peters.
But he is also fighting some truly repulsive, hate-filled personal attacks aimed at his personal life.
You see, Carl DeMaio is gay. Openly, proudly gay – so much so that he includes pictures of himself and his partner in campaign literature.
This being the case, when the ugly attacks started coming, gay advocacy groups, of course, rushed to his defe……..oops, wait a minute. Never mind. Actually, the attacks are, at least in part, coming from gay advocacy groups.
See, you\’re not allowed to be Republican and gay. Not to them. Gay pride stops at the Democrat door. You pass through it into Republican territory and your being gay is not a positive, or even a neutral, it is an object of hate and ridicule.
Want specifics? Ok. Read this excerpt from Dana Perino\’s article about Mr. DeMaio:
WhenI talked to DeMaio, he said he doesn\’t want to emphasize his sexualorientation or his challenging childhood – he prefers to talk aboutthe fiscal condition of the country and his candidacy to defeatfreshman Rep. Scott Peters, a Democrat. But because he is who he is,and because his opponents are making an issue about his sexualorientation and lying about his record, he\’s willing to talk aboutit. And he\’s disrupting all of the stereotypes.
Forinstance, DeMaio has been the target of homophobic attacks. But whereare those attacks coming from? It\’s not always from the far rightsocial conservatives you\’d expect; rather, it\’s been fromDeMaio\’s left – the liberal and Democrat-affiliated groups thatyou\’d think would be proud that an openly gay successfulbusinessman has decided to run for office.
Onefalse attack drew the attention of the San Diego Ethics Commission. An anonymous left-wing group funded a SuperPac and sent mailers ofDeMaio Photoshopped next to a drag queen to neighborhoods with amajority of elderly and African-American voters, knowing that such aphoto would depress support for DeMaio.
Thatwas so egregious and false that the group was fined by the city\’sEthics Commission, but even after that, and with his 100 percentvoting record with the LGBT community, the Left still didn\’t speakup to defend him. They told DeMaio, “It\’s complicated.”
“I\’vefound more tolerance, acceptance and inclusion from socialconservative groups who have to reconcile that I\’m a Republican whohappens to be gay…versus the intolerance the LGBT leaders see me asa gay man who happens to be a Republican,” DeMaio said.
Asthe race heats up and DeMaio gains in the polls ahead of theRepublican primary on June 3rd, the LGBT groups have gone fromsilence about his candidacy to actively working against him.
“Despiteclaims that they insist on tolerance, diversity and acceptance on allpolitical issues, I suspect that they really want to keep intacttheir alliance with unions so that they don\’t upset their fundingsources and coalition. The Democratic groups need the GOP to remainthe bogeyman because if the Republicans are no longer a threat, whoneeds to donate to these LGBT political groups?” he said.
As you can see, at least some of the LGBT crowd are not really advocates for people to have freedom of sexual orientation at all. They are advocates for Democrats to have freedom of sexual orientation. Period, the end. Republicans can take a long walk on a short pier.
Just like feminist groups and their treatment of conservative women.
Amazing, isn\’t it, how much hatred is spewed by people who profess to be against hatred? And nowhere is it more evident than in the case of Carl DeMaio.
Speaking as a straight male, please be assured that I am rooting very hard for Mr. DeMaio to win his primary and sail through to victory in November. I hope you feel the same way.
