Bari Weiss has been named editor in chief of CBS News.
Ms Weiss was – and by most standards still is – a political liberal (she self-characterizes as a “left-leaning centrist”). Except she was not liberal enough/not accepting enough of left wing doctrine to hold her job as op ed writer at the New York Times.
And not only that, but (gasp!!!) she supports Israel.
Given the way CBS has presented news in recent years, this represents a lurch to the right. And you can bet there are plenty of people in the news department who are unhappy with that lurch and/or terrified that she will move news coverage in a direction they do not like.
How will this shake out? That is a great question; one no one can know for sure.
But here’s a thought: what if Bari Weiss regenerates CBS News coverage in a way that makes it more evenhanded/less leftward? And what if CBS ratings go up as the result?
As Dean Martin once sang, wouldn’t that be a kick in the head?
