AN EXCELLENT SYNOPSIS OF THE TRUMP TRIAL

Here, from John Hinderaker’s latest commentary at powerlineblog.com, is an excellent synopsis of what Donald Trump is being charged with…and how utterly ridiculous it is:

I summed up Bragg’s case against Trump here. In a word, it is pathetic. Trump made one or more “hush money” payments to Stormy Daniels, which was perfectly legal. The alleged crime is that his business documents reflect falsely that the payments were for legal fees and expenses. They were made to Michael Cohen, who in turn paid Daniels.

The case against Trump is a joke because the records violation of which Trump is accused is a misdemeanor, on which the statute of limitations has run. It is only a felony if the records were falsified to cover up another crime. That is what Bragg alleges. But what crime? Bragg’s indictment doesn’t say. Presumably his theory will be that the payment to Daniels was a campaign finance violation, only it wasn’t. The payment was legal and no false filing was made with the FEC. Trump has not been charged with, let alone convicted of, any such violation.

Perfectly stated.

Are there any questions…what possible reason this trial is taking place, other than to “get” Trump regardless of whether there is any legal “there” there?

But, hey, it does take Trump off the campaign trail, probably for weeks, and it is costing him a ton of money for legal representation (add in the other equally ridiculous, Democrat-created, 100% political charges against Trump in New York, Baltimore, Atlanta, and we’re talking millions).

So even if there aren’t any convictions (which, given where these trials are being held, there will be – so you can count on appeal after appeal) it makes it pretty much impossible for him to campaign.

Any doubt at all that this is the real purpose of their multi-state witch hunt? I hope not, because that is exactly, precisely what it is.

I’ll end with a question:  what if the witch hunt backfires?  What if the “get Trump no matter what” route Democrats are taking cause his poll numbers to rise, not fall, because people – even people who don’t like Trump – are sickened by what is being done to him?  What will they do then?

If I were a Democrat operative that question, and what (if anything) I could do to deal with it, would be losing me sleep every night.
