Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – who some Democrats apparently think is the future of their party – had an answer to President Trump’s threat of tariffs on Colombian coffee if the country continued to refuse to take back its citizens who came to the United States illegally. Here is her “analysis”, via a post on X (twitter):
“To ‘punish’ Colombia, Trump is about to make every American pay even more for coffee. Remember: WE pay the tariffs, not Colombia.
“Trump is all about making inflation WORSE for working class Americans, not better. He’s lining the pockets of himself and the billionaire class.”
Ahhh, there you have it. Straight from Alexandria’s occasional-cortex*. The result of Trump’s threat would be that we pay more for coffee, and Trump and the rest of the “billionaire class” get richer (how would Colombian tariffs on coffee make US billionaires richer? Ask AOC).
Except…
…almost immediately after the tariff threat Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro first responded with an exceptionally ugly, negative X post responding to Trump’s tariff (I’ll put it up in my next blog), told him that Colombia would answer with a tariff of its own (I’m sure Ms. Ocasio-Cortez was impressed)…
…but then, just hours later, agreed to take back the Colombians who came to the United States illegally, thus – assuming he makes good on it – ending the tariff issue as quickly as it began.
Why would Petro do this? Maybe because – try to pay attention here, Alexandria – there is no shortage of coffee beans available from other countries, including neighboring Latin American countries that have the same kinds of climate conditions as Colombia and would love to get this business. They might even pressure growers to charge US purchasers less for coffee than Colombia, to seal a multi-year deals.
Trump knew this. Petro knew this. And that is why, after his for-show diatribe against Trump, Petro folded like a cheap tent.
Bottom line? We won’t be paying more for coffee, Colombian illegals will be deported right back to Colombia, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – again – comes across as a naive, ridiculous woman-child.
This is the future of the Democrat Party? Yikes.
