Years ago, after repeated suicide/homicide bombing attacks by Palestinian Arabs who crossed into Israel from Gaza and Judea/Samaria (the west bank), Israel built a security fence. It stands to this day.
The fence had two results: one was that the suicide/homicide attacks were stopped cold, and the other was that the international community condemned Israel in the strongest of terms – and still does – for building the wall.
How dare they. After all, it cut through some Palestinian Arab land, and separated a number of farmers from some of their olive trees. That was far too great a price to pay for preventing Israelis to be blown up in busses, restaurants, hotels and public squares.
Well, now we have this, excerpted from an article in Ha\’aretz:
SaudiArabia is building a sophisticated fence along its northern border tosecure the desert kingdom “against infiltrators and smugglers,”according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Thefirst stage of the border security program was announced by SaudiKing Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Friday. The first phase willstretch for 900 kilometers (560 miles) on the country\’s northernfrontier.
Theproject includes five layers of fencing, reinforced by watch towers,night-vision cameras and radar. Control complexes have been built inareas stretching from Hafr Al Batin in the northeast to Turaif nearthe Jordanian border, SPA said.
Theproject will include eight command and control center, 32 rapidresponse centers, three rapid intervention squads, 38 back and frontgates, 78 monitoring towers, 10 monitoring and surveillance vehicles,1,450,000 meters of fiber optics networks and 50 radars.
You want a security fence? That\’s a security fence. Five layers, watch towers, night-vision cameras, radar, etc…. and it runs the entire length of Saudi Arabia\’s border with Iraq.
Comparatively speaking, this baby makes Israel\’s fence look about as secure as the one in front of where The Beaver and Wally lived.
And since the international community has made it clear that security fences are terrible things, let\’s all sit back and wait for the condemnations of Saudi Arabia for building one that puts Israel\’s to shame.
I figure they should be coming roughly the same time that Code Pink merges with the Family Research Center.
