Here is a picture of Massachussets Governor Maura Healey, flanked by deleriously happy women, signing a piece of legislation:

What are they so happy about? The legislation allowswomen in Massachussets to “abort” pregnancies right up to the end of their pregnancies. (And a number of other states have identical legislation on the books as well.)
Does that make you happy too? I hope not.
Speaking as someone who has no problem at all with a woman aborting her pregnancy – until the baby has developed enough to be viable – i.e. it would be alive outside the womb – it sickens me to the depths of my being.
Let’s be clear here: if a woman aborts in the late part of a pregnancy, with few execeptions (almost none at all in the last month or two), she is aborting a live child.
Why do I say this? Because, if she went into labor that day and gave birth, what came out would not be some inanimate lump of fetal material, it would be a live baby.
Therefore, she is not aborting a fetus, she is killing her child; a child that would have full human rights, very much including the right to live, if it were not in the womb.
The one and only difference, therefore, is one of geography; whether the live baby is inside or outside of the womb.
That means the law Governor Healey just signed into law does not just end unwanted pregnancies, it provides women with an end-around to legally kill their babies.
That is what the women applauding this legislation are so happy about. The right to kill their live babies.
Should there be legal ways to terminate a pregnancy if the child inside is dead or horribly unwell in a way that medicine cannot address? If the mother seriously risks major injury or death? That is another story entirely, and I would fully support the appropriate legislation.
But this bill does nothing less than allow that “mother” (not a good use of the word, is it?) to kill the baby for any reason at all. Even if it is because she just decided she didn’t want a baby.
And if that’s ok, why not sign legislation enabling the mother to kill a one week or one month old baby for the same reason? Other than which side of the womb the baby is on, the circumstances are identical, aren’t they?
Ok, you now know my position on end-of-birth “abortions”. What’s yours…and why?
