WHY I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR TED CRUZ (CONT.)

Excerpted from Gromer Jeffers Jr.\’s article in the Dallas Morning News:

Sen. Ted Cruz\’s campaign for president has featured strongreferences to faith and Christianity, which he says will help restore thecountry to greatness.

The Texas senator and son of a Carrollton pastor is stickingto religion, even in New Hampshire. The voting population there is heavy withlibertarians and is not as influenced by evangelicals as the small towns inIowa, where Cruz has had success in the polls.

“For too long there has been a spirit of fear and timidityin Washington,” Cruz told The Dallas Morning News on thesecond day of his New Hampshire tour. “We should not be ashamed of Christ. Weshould be willing to speak the truth with a smile.”

At every point on his tour, Cruz asked voters to pray forhim and the country, using one of Ronald Reagan\’s favorite Bible verses, 2Chronicles 7:14, as inspiration.

“If my people, which are called by my name, would humblethemselves and pray, and seek my faith and turn from their wicked ways, then Iwill hear their prayers and will forgive their sins and I will heal theirland,” he said.

Let me be clear:  I have the greatest respect for Christians and Christian beliefs.

But the United States is not a Christian country.  It is a country with a majority population of Christians.  And there is a world of difference between the two.

Until now, I never heard that Ronald Reagan found 2 Chronicles 7:14 to be one of his favorite biblical passages.  But, assuming it is true, I know that Ronald Reagan never GOVERNED based on that passage.  He understood that there is a difference between personally held religious beliefs and what should be imposed on a country with many different beliefs.

Ted Cruz keeps making it clear to me that he either does not see, or does not care about, that difference.

There are several reasons I would not vote for Ted Cruz if he were the Republican presidential nominee.  This is one of them.

I hope Republicans, collectively, are smart enough to nominate someone else.
