ACADEMIC PC LUNACY: EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

Ken Berwitz

According to Matt Lamb\’s article at thecollegefix.com, East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, has adopted the following definition of “sexual battery”:

“The intentional or attempted sexual touching of another person\’s clothed or unclothed body, including but not limited to the mouth, neck, buttocks, anus, genitalia, or breast, by another with any part of the body or any object in a sexual manner without their consent.”

Help me out here.  Accordingto Black\’s Law Dictionary, battery is  “Any unlawfulbeating, or other wrongful physical violence or constraint, inflicted on a human being without his (or her) consent”.

If an East Carolina male student is on a date with an East Carolina female student, and puts his arm around her or tries to kiss her, or (gasp!) puts his hand on her breast while they are kissing, he is guilty of SEXUAL BATTERY??????????

Are these people out of their minds?

I don\’t know about you, but when I was dating, I didn\’t know whether my sexual advances were unwanted until I tried them.  If my date made it clear that she did not want to be kissed, I stopped trying.  And I sort of assumed not wanting to be kissed meant not wanting me to try anything further along the line either.

When that happened, I didn\’t think of it as committing sexual battery.  I thought of it as trying to make out.  Like everyone else I knew then….and know now as well.

What\’s next?  Will East Carolina University require a signed consent form to brush by someone in the cafeteria?  Will they call the police if it happens without one?

Every time I think college/university “rules” can\’t get more asinine, more ridiculously PC, I am proven wrong.
