Yesterday I wrote about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer threatening to block passage of a Continuing Resolution (CR), thus shutting government down. Here is a key segment of what I wrote:
The idea is to make that happen and then, somehow, blame Trump and Republicans for it.
Will that work?
No way to tell for sure. But given that, according to just about every poll I’ve seen, Democrats are so poorly thought of right now, it’s a pretty good bet that they, not Republicans, will take the blame.
Does this mean Schumer will back down? Maybe.
We now have our answer.
From Alex Nitzberg’s article, posted today at Fox News:
As the prospect of a partial government shutdown looms and the Senate is poised to vote on a House-passed government-funding measure that would avert a shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced on Thursday that he “will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down.”
He said that while the “bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse.”
Hmmm, that was quick.
What suddenly gave Minority Leader Schumer this insight about the consequences for America…which, we are supposed to believe, he didn’t have 24 hours before? Maybe a few vulnerable Democrat senators up for re-election next year who don’t want to have to explain this away?
The article then goes on to quote several safe-seat Democrats after another excoriating Schumer for his switcheroo.
No surprise there. These are the people who regularly damage this once-great political party – which now seems hell benton destroying itself…and, based on events like this, is having a good deal of success in the effort.
What a mess.
