How do we feel about the ability to vote early, a voter ID requirement and a proof of citizenship requirement?
Here are the latest data, from Megan Brenan’s article at news.gallup.com. It tells us the result of Gallup’s latest poll, conducted October 1 – 12:
With less than two weeks to go in the presidential campaign and voting already underway in many states, 76% of U.S. adults favor the concept of early voting. Two other election law policies are supported by even more Americans — requiring photo identification to vote (84%) and providing proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time (83%).
There you have it. Most people are fine with early voting. But huge majorities want a requirement – photo ID, proof of citizenship or both – that voters prove they are legally able to vote.
And in case you think this a Republican vs. Democrat issue, here are the data by party affiliation:
-A photo ID requirement: Democrats: 67%, Independents: 84%, Republicans: 98%
-Proof of Citizenship: Democrats: 66%, Independents: 84%, Republicans: 96%
As you can see, virtually all Republicans, more than four in five Independents…and even two-thirds of Democrats favor these requirements.
Therefore, when Democrat politicians reject these basic voter-integrity safeguards, they are not only standing against Republicans, they are standing against everyone else.
So why do they do it? Why do Democrat politicians fight every way they can against making it harder to vote illegally?
Well, the one argument you hear most frequently is that laws such as these are meant to suppress the Black vote, therefore are racist.
But is that so?
Speaking personally, if I were Black, this argument – that I am somehow less capable of providing ID or proof of citizenship than White and Asian people – would be a racist insult to me.
And, importantly, I would have plenty of company. I know this because Gallup actually broke the data by race. It found that, among “people of color”, 80% support photo ID and 76% support proof of citizenship.
Given the above, can someone please explain how these requirements could possibly be construed as racist?
And if there is no way to do so (which there obviously isn’t), then what is left to explain Democrat politicians’ war against basic voter requirements…
…other than that they want it to be as easy to vote illegally as possible?
If you have a more logical explanation I would love to know what it is. I’ll wait.
