Today\’s quote comes to us from Florida Senator, and Presidential aspirant, Marco Rubio.
Mr. Rubio, clearly stung by the nasty, elitist (more on this later) attacks on his personal finances by Donald Trump, who called his personal finances “a disaster”, has decided to hit back.
Here is what Mr. Rubio said yesterday:
“I find it ironic that the only person running for President that\’s ever declared a bankruptcy, four times in the past 25 years, is attacking anyone on finances”
Ok, let\’s understand a couple of things.
One is that Donald Trump is a multibillionaire. The image some folks have of bankruptcy meaning an indigent man with nothing left have absolutely nothing to do with him. The “bankruptcy” instances Marco Rubio is referencing were corporate bankruptcies which Trump used for business purposes, which – forgetting what they did to other people – saved Trump untold amounts of money. So this makes his invocation of Trump\’s bankruptcies misleading and unfair. Not untrue, but misleading and unfair.
Another is that Trump\’s attacks on Marco Rubio – who grew up lower middle class with two hard-working parents, not rich and privileged, like Donald Trump did (did you find his comment that daddy gave him “a small loan” of $1,000,000 as elitist and obtuse as I did?) – are elitist, and absolutely obnoxious. What financial problems Mr. Rubio has had may well be because he had to learn finances from scratch rather than being handed “small” amounts like a million dollars. That is how he got so where he is today – which is still far from rich, let alone as fabulously wealthy as Donald Trump.
There was a time in this country when we greatly admired people who rose from very modest beginnings to get to where Marco Rubio has gotten. Some of us still greatly admire those people. Count me as one of them – maybe you are too.
I award Marco Rubio Quote Of The Day honors for defusing Donald Trump\’s personal attack on him in just 28 years, by sticking it to him in a way that the average person can digest, understand, and maybe laugh about.
I\’ll bet The Donald doesn\’t like that one bit. No one likes being one-upped that effectively.
I can\’t wait for the next time……
