DEFINING DEMENTIA DOWN

Joe Biden is at or coming nearer and nearer to non compos mentis status.  And, assuming Democrats don’t find a way to prevent him from running for re-election (which I am guessing they will do), they have to come up with some way of making his apparent opponent, former President Donald Trump, seem no more mentally fit than he is.

So how can it be done?

I’ll show you two recent attempts, so you can see what you think of them:

One is an article by David Moye at the hard-left website huffpost.com, titled “Trump Is Apparently Having Trouble Pronouncing 4-Syllable Words”.  The basis of this article, and the generality about Trump’s ability to pronounce 4 syllable words is that, during a campaign rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin yesterday, he stumbled over the word “infrastructure”.

Another, via an article by Ed Mazza – also for huffpost.com – informs us that “Trump Gets Quick Lesson In Recent History After Awkward Error During Rally Rant”.  The basis for this story?  During a campaign stop in Michigan, he said:

“Three years ago, we were a great nation.  And we will soon be a great nation again.”

Mazza’s no-doubt breathlessly written point?  That Biden took office three years and three months ago.  So, technically, Trump’s timeline placed that comment at the very beginning of the Biden administration…though it can also be argued that, since Trump left office on January 20, 2024 he was, in fact, President three years ago.

Well, there they are.

Joe Biden will not – cannot – speak in front of an audience without notes that he reads from…and usually screws up anyway.  He virtually never answers reporters’ questions…and when he does it is a good bet his staff has to “clarify” what he said afterwards because it makes no sense.  That, of course, is before we get to the fact that his eyes now are perpetually half-closed, he walks like he’s got a pants-load, and his staff has to pray every time he takes a few steps on a staircase.

By contrast, Donald Trump, during two extended, entirely extemporaneous speeches (no notes, no cheat-sheets), stumbled on one word and, technically, might have misstated a date by a few months.

This, incredibly, is supposed to prove that mental faculties-wise, they’re both in the same boat.

But will it work?

Scarily enough, the answer is that for people who are stupid enough, and/or ignorant enough, and/or partisan enough, and/or just hate Trump enough, it probably will.

And their votes count just as much as yours does.

Good grief.
