This is by no means a final opinion – there is plenty of time before that evolves – but I have to say, the more I think about Carly Fiorino as a Vice Presidential nominee, the more I like the idea.
I don\’t think of Ms. Fiorino as a Presidential candidate. While an extremely successful businessperson, she has neither political nor foreign policy experience. I want someone who has both.
But as a Vice Presidential candidate? Think about it:
-As noted, she is an extremely successful businessperson – someone who understands how business works in a way career politicians almost certainly do not;
-She worked her way up to that position at Hewlett-Packard…which suggests that she is a quick, capable study who would quickly learn the ropes, politically, if elected Vice President;
-She is a D.C. outsider – a real one, not a phony claimant. I suspect most of us would be thrilled to have that non-D.C. perspective in place;
-From a pure electability standpoint, she is personable, articulate, attractive…and, as a woman she will take away the “male only” mantra used effectively by Democrats in previous elections – which would be an especially important counterpoint if Hillary Clinton holds on, and winds up the Democrat nominee.
-And she looks about five times better in a pants suit than Hillary did the best day of her life.
That is pretty powerful stuff – which Republican operatives should be front-and-center thinking about as the herd thins and we start getting down to who actually has a shot at being the nominee.
Now, if they would only fix that disastrous, intolerant, intractable party platform (more on this in a subsequent blog).
