If Republicans can have Donald Trump – a hugely rich businessman with an even bigger ego – why not Democrats too?
From Maureen Dowd\’s latest column, in yesterday\’s New York Times:
Potent friends of America\’s lord of latte, Howard Schultz, have been pressing him to join the Democratic primary, thinking the time is right for someone who\’s not a political lifer. For the passionate 62-year-old – watching the circus from Seattle – it may be a tempting proposition.
After coming up from the housing projects in Brooklyn, Schultz reimagined Starbucks and then revived it. He has strong opinions, and even position papers, about what he calls the fraying American dream. While he was promoting his book on veterans last year, he honed a message about making government work again and finding “authentic, truthful leadership.”
Howard Schultz is probably not going to be running for President. And if he does run, he won\’t win the Democrat nomination – though it would be fun to see who can position himself further left: Schultz or Bernie Sanders.
But I bet they\’d have a spirited debate over what conversations Starbucks “baristas” should engage customers in when they order their latte grandes…
The real point of this blog, by the way, is not so much Howard Schultz or Bernie Sanders, but the fact – and, increasingly, it is one – that Democrats are scared excrementless of a Hillary Clinton candidacy, and are desperately seeking someone – anyone – to jump in and save 2016 for them.
I think the winner in all this has to be Joe Biden. But, then again, you never know.
Stay tuned.
