Today\’s quote comes to us from Corey Brooks, Pastor of the New Beginnings Church of Chicago, which is situated in what arguably is the single most dangerous part of that city.
Here is what he has to say:
“African-Americans have been loyal to the Democratic Party. But there is a group of African-Americans that feel like the Democratic Party has not been loyal to us.
“We have a large, disproportionate number of people who are impoverished. We have a disproportionate number of people who are incarcerated, we have a disproportionate number of people who are unemployed, the educational system has totally failed, and all of this primarily has been under Democratic regimes in our neighborhoods So, the question for me becomes, how can our neighborhoods be doing so awful and so bad when we\’re so loyal to this party who is in power? It\’s a matter of them taking complete advantage of our vote.”
“They have a failing plan. A business owner wouldn\’t allow the person who runs it to remain in charge for 50 years, constantly running it into the ground.”
Does Pastor Brooks have a point? Is the disastrous situation in South Side Chicago due all the years of one-party governance, with that party knowing it cannot lose elections no matter how bad things get, and therefore being able to take the citizens it represents for granted?
I don\’t know. But I am 100% sure that it is at least a contributing factor.
And I also know that Pastor Corey Brooks earns Quote Of The Day honors for daring to reason that if the Black population is not doing well, and it vastly votes for just one party to represent it, maybe it is worth considering another party.
By doing so, he has shown a great deal more openness than most of his fellow Black Chicagoans have…and it is long overdue.
