THE TRAYVONIZING OF FREDDIE GRAY

How badly did the brand-new, untested, inexperienced state attorney, Marilyn Mosby botch the Baltimore 6 case?

Here are the first two paragraphs of an article just issued by reuters:

The Baltimore police investigation into the death of a black man from injuries sustained in police custody fails to support some charges filed by the city prosecutor, CNN reported on Thursday.

Citing officials briefed on the separate probes by prosecutor Marilyn Mosby and police into the death of Freddie Gray, the television news network said the lack of support for charges from the police findings could allow lawyers representing the officers to undercut the prosecution.

That, incidentally, is before we get to the fact – cited further on in the article – that two of the Baltimore 6\’s lawyers are claiming the knife that Freddie Gray was carrying was illegal…which would blow most of the lesser charges against them right out of the water.

And, as one of the lawyers pointed out, even if the knife turned out to be legal, there was what is called a “good faith” arrest (i.e. the police arrested him for possession of the knife with a reasonable belief that it was illegal) – and that blows the charges out of the water just as decisively.

What we are seeing is the Trayvonizing of this case.  By that I mean a zealous prosecutor (in the Trayvon Martin case it was Angela Corey, here it is Marilyn Mosby) who has filed charges far beyond what is supportable by the facts as we currently know them.

The short-term benefit is that the protesters, and rioters/looters/arsonists among them, are temporarily appeased…at the cost of filing ridiculous, overblown charges which significantly damage the case, along with Ms. Mosby\’s credibility.

Now:  what happens if/when these ridiculous, overblown charges fall by the wayside because they should never have been filed in the first place?  What will appease them then?

This started out a mess, has become nothing but a bigger mess….and the worst is almost certainly yet to come.

The Trayvonizing process continues.
