We all know that Republican presidential candidates will be attacking Hillary Clinton. And most of us know that mainstream media, which has had an ongoing love affair with Ms. Clinton for decades, will either ignore, downplay or “answer” many of these attacks on her behalf.
But what about when her fellow Democrats attack?
Martin O\’Malley, former Mayor of Baltimore, Governor of Maryland, and probable presidential candidate, has made a few preliminary jabs at Ms. Clinton without mentioning her by name.
Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-professed Democratic Socialist, who formerly declared his candidacy yesterday, is certain to attack her from the left – probably using much of the language Democrats reserve for Republicans: i.e. that she is a rich elitest, in bed with moneyed interest and out of touch with everyone but the wealthy.
And now we have the former Senator from Rhode Island, Lincoln Chaffee – also a possible presidential candidate – attacking her the same way Mr. Sanders will, only doing it first:
“I would argue that between what\’s happening internationally in her tenure as Secretary of State, no real accomplishments, and now these new allegations coming out about the Clinton foundation and the book coming out next week. These are real.”
Ironic, isn\’t it, that those exact words could have come from the mouths of every Republican presidential hopeful?
But the difference – and it is a huge difference – is that Hillary\’s shock troops…the James Carville/Lanny Davis/John Podesta crowd…cannot attack fellow Democrats the same way they attack Republicans. Certainly not left wing Democrats, who constitute a huge segment of the party, without which she cannot win an election.
And this, of course, is before we find out whether Elizabeth Warren joins the fun.
How will Hillary Clinton handle these kinds of attacks from her own party\’s left wing? Beats the hell out of me. And, I suspect, Ms. Clinton as well.
Hillary Clinton inevitable? Believe me, she\’s evitable.
