Marco Rubio was on the Today Show this morning, and was interviewed by Matt Lauer.
The good news is that Lauer ran a fair interview. It doesn\’t always happen, but it did this time.
The bad news is that most of the questions he asked were inane. Do you really care when Rubio decided to run, or what his relationship is with Jeb Bush? How about what he would do with Iran? With Russia? How about his intentions regarding abortion and gay marriage, both of which Rubio opposes: would he see this strictly as a personal matter, or would he try to push legislation banning one or both? It seems to me that these are the things voters would be far more interested in.
The one important area Lauer did touch on was to ask Rubio why, if people are critical of Barack Obama as a first-term Senator without qualifications for the office, and he has the same background, they should vote for him.
Rubio\’s answer was interesting. I have an opinion about it…but instead of posting my opinion I will give you this link, so you can decide for yourself. The question/answer sequence begins at 1:37.
Overall, I found Marco Rubio to present himself exceptionally well. He comes across as articulate, facile, easy to listen to, poised and sincere-sounding. Whether he, in fact, is any of these things is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. That\’s your call.
One other thing: yesterday I blogged about an offensive and insulting series of comments Debbie Wasserman Schultz tossed out at Rubio. At that time I speculated mainstream media would be nice enough to largely ignore these comments on Ms. Wasserman Schultz\’s behalf. This morning, Matt Lauer didn\’t ask about her comments and, unless I missed something, The Today Show didn\’t report on them.
