Today\’s quote comes to us from Ed Schultz, the take-no-prisoners left winger on MSNBC….er, who was a take- no-prisoners right winger first, but changed over because he wasn\’t succeeding at it.
Mr. Schultz sees a parallel between President Obama\’s intention to “normalize” relations with Cuba and President Reagan\’s efforts to free USSR-dominated East Germany from the yoke of communist oppression. Honest, he really does (or, at least, he says he does for the benefit of MSNBC viewers).
Shultz\’s exact words:
“Isn\’tthis Barack Obama\’s \’tear down this wall, Mr. Castro\’ – that kindof a moment? I mean, if change can take place with the Soviet Union, why can\’t it take place with the Cuban people here?”
Wow. Quite a comparison.
And, other than the fact that…
-Reagan\’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” statement, made on June 12, 1987, was a challenge and a demand, while Obama is asking nicely,
-Reagan made no concessions to the East German Soviet puppets, while Obama has given Cuba the benefit of an insanely one-sided “swap” of a communications guy for three convicted spies,
-Reagan, then George Bush, kept the political and economic pressure on the USSR until it fell apart in 1991. Obama\’s “normalization”, being made at the exact time that two of Cuba\’s main benefactors are so strapped financially they may not be able to prop up the castro regime, is a lifeline that can enable the freedomless, repressive communist Cuban system to stay afloat…
…it makes perfect sense.
I award Ed Schultz Quote Of The Day honors because, by making this beyond-imbecilic comment, he has proven himself to be as loyal and true an MSNBC toady as he can possibly be – which, given Schultz\’s low-and-sinking-further ratings, may be the only way The Ed Show stays on air (Here are his latest ratings vs. the competition – for Tuesday night):
Net 5PM Total (000s) 25-54\’s (000s)
FOX The Five 2,073 342
CNN Situation Room 598 169
MSNBCThe Ed Show 494 124
Way to go, guy.
And what will you do for an encore? Compare JFK\’s “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” line to “It depends on what is is”?
