Most media reports would lead you to believe that President Trump’s standing with Latino voters ranges between disastrous and cataclysmic.
In fact, polling usually puts it in the 25-30% range — and one recent poll (an outlier, of course) had it at 47%.
But, polling aside, there are reasons that President Trump, and Republicans in general, can do very well with Latino voters in 2020 and beyond.
One of them is that, by and large (with many exceptions, of course), Latinos tend to be religious (usually Catholic) and have relatively conservative social/familial views. That coincides far more with today’s Republican Party than with Democrats.
But, it can be argued, even if that is true, it hasn’t turned many of them into Republicans yet, and there is no guarantee it will in the near, or even not-so-near future.
So what alternative might quickly resonate with Latino voters?
If I were a Republican operative, this would be my message:
-Democrats support open borders with Mexico, which would mean a great many central and south American illegals will come into the country.
-As President Trump has pointed out, they will include members of drug cartels and organized gangs.
-Whose neighborhoods do you think those drug cartels and gangs will be operating from? What do you think that will do to those neighborhoods?
-Whose children do you think they will be recruiting to join them?
-And what do you think they will do to parents who tell them to get lost?
Do you think that might resonate? Do you think it might build support in the Latino community?
I know I do.
