TRUMP’S NORTH KOREA STRATEGY: UPDATE

Boy is that President Trump lucky.

He sent a “Dear Kim” letter to North Korea’s deranged man-child leader, kim jung-un, telling him the talks were off until kim’s attitude changed.  What a moron.

Except…

…not one day later, kim communicated that the attitude thingie was all a misunderstanding and we want to talk.  Honest.

From Nicole Goodkind’s article at what is left of Newsweek:

Trump sent a letter Thursday canceling the denuclearization talks after North Korean officials insulted Vice President Mike Pence’s intelligence and reportedly became unresponsive to the summit planning process. But later that evening, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a statement saying that he would still be open to meeting with Trump and American officials. “We would like to make known to the US side once again that we have the intent to sit with the US side to solve problem(s) regardless of ways at any time,” he said to his official state media.

It appears that Kim’s response was enough to satiate Trump, who said Friday that “it was a very nice statement they put out; we’ll see what happens.” “We’re going to see what happens,” he later clarified. “We’re talking to them right now. It could even be the 12th … We’d like to do it.”

Trump told reporters that he had no hard feelings toward North Korea because “everybody plays games.”

Aside from her incorrect use of the word “satiate” (Mr. Trump is far from fully satisfied, as his “we’ll see what happens” comment makes clear), Ms. Goodkind has it right.

She’s certainly doing better than Gregory Korte and John Fritze of USA Today, whose article, headlined “TRUMP AGAIN CHANGES TONE ON NORTH KOREA:  “WE ARE TALKING TO THEM NOW”, suggests President Trump is unilaterally jumping from one position to another, instead of reacting to the response he orchestrated with his letter to North Korea.

In any event, the point is that these talks appear to be on again – with the USA in a stronger position than it was before President Trump put the wood to kim jung-un.

Is this part of Mr. Trump’s strategy?  In keeping with what he wrote it in “The Art Of The Deal”?  Or is he, again, just a lucky guy…like he was “just lucky” with NATO, NAFTA and our trade relationship with China?

Your call.
