Would it make sense to you if the fight against racism is being conducted by racists?
I didn’t think so.
With that in mind, please read the following excerpt from Abigail Marone’s article at campusreform.org:
A Georgetown University student group recently barred white students from attending a community discussion on a proposal to arm campus police.
The “Community Dialogue on Racism & [Georgetown University Police Department]” was hosted by the Georgetown United Against Police Aggression (GUAPA) student group on April 24, and despite describing the event as an evening of “community and discussion,” the organizers specifically stated that “allies” were “not welcome” to attend the event.
“It’s time to talk. All of us have a story about GUPD. All of us know someone who has been targeted. Let’s do something about it,” the event description stated, urging students to “Come this Tuesday for community and discussion.”
The event page stipulated, however, that “this space will center the voices and experiences of students of color,” informing “allies for the safety of students of color” that “allies are not welcome to attend this preliminary dialogue” before mentioning that “food will be provided.”
Translation: “We’re going to be talking about racism on the part of campus police. So Black students only are welcome. If you are White? Asian? Even if you agree with us, stay out. You’re not invited. You have the wrong skin color”.
In other words, fighting racism by creating more of it.
Does this demonstrate the level of common sense one might associate with students attending a school with Georgetown University’s reputation? Does it demonstrate any common sense at all?
Well, even if it doesn’t, you can’t say this example of overt racism won’t have a result. It is pretty certain to please White Citizens’ Councils everywhere they still exist.
So, congratulations to the organizers at Georgetown United Against Police Aggression. Way to go.
And congratulations to whomever is paying their tuition/room and board/other expenses (over $72,000 this year), which enables them to demonstrate, on-campus, that they are what they hate. I hope you’re happy with what you’ve paid for.
