Let me start by telling you that I consider jimmy kimmel a pig. A foul-mouthed viciously nasty pig who has no problem at all attacking people for who and what they are.
As you may be aware, kimmel, whose hatred of Donald Trump is excessive even by Trump-hater standards, decided, last week, to personally insult Mr. Trump’s wife, Melania, by sneeringly mocking her accent while she read a story to a group of children.
Point of order before continuing: if kimmel ever did that to deride a Black personality, say Rep. John Lewis for example, he’d probably be off the air the next day. But Donald Trump’s wife? No problem – open season.
In any case, Sean Hannity, who, as I assume you know, hosts a prime-time cable news show on Fox and has made note of Kimmel’s attacks on Trump in the past, decided the Melania “comedy” was enough, and let him have it. Hannity, among other things, pointed out that English was one of five languages that Melania Trump speaks, and pointedly asked kimmel how many he speaks. Hannity also referenced skits from kimmel’s past where he tossed overtly sexual comments at women, and called him “Harvey Weinstein, Jr.”
kimmel, instead of either ignoring Hannity or maybe showing a scintilla of contrition for making fun of the First Lady’s accent and his unseemly women-as-sexual-objects past, decided to go even lower. His answer was to make several especially crude jokes about Hannity being engaged in a homosexual relationship with President Trump.
Another point of order: if kimmel made the same series of “jokes” about, say, Hillary Clinton and Rachel Maddow, how long do you think it would take for him to be suspended or canned? How many days…or would it be hours or minutes?
In any event, the combination of these two supposedly funny threads apparently crossed a line even kimmel’s side could see. So now – only, I believe, because he was damn well told to do it, probably by his employer, ABC – kimmel has “apologized”.
Or has he?
Here is kimmel’s “apology”. Please read it through and see if you think the word fits:
Some helluvan apology that is. An implicit claim that there was equal fault (rather than Hannity’s comments being a reaction to what kimmel initiated), an “apology” only to gay people – not Hannity or Trump, a blow-off of the insult to Ms. Trump, a hope that Hannity (not him, just Hannity) will learn from it, and an implied claim that, until now, Hannity has been anti-women, anti-immigrants and anti-first ladies.
Would you accept that as an apology?
If anyone “apologized” to me that way, I would answer with three words, the first being “go” and the third being “yourself”. I’m guessing you can come up with the second word on your own.
Hannity has promised a response on tonight’s show. I strongly suspect it will be a more elaborate, somewhat more tasteful, version of what I would have said. In any event, I hope so.
I’ll end the way I started. jimmy kimmel is a pig.
