…this little snippet of what passes for discussion should give you a hint.
From Saturday’s Melissa Harris-Perry show, during a discussion of the idiotic idea by Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, to have store coffee-makers (I decine to use the steroidally pretentious term “barista” here) engage customers in a discussion on race:
Melissa Harris Perry: Well what if instead of saying, “#RaceTogether,” it quoted that LBJ, right, and it said something like, y’know, “At the heart of the battle of equality is a deep-seated belief in the dem-” What if instead it gave something substantive?(Guest) Whitney Dow: Oh absolutely, I’d rather have it say, y’know, “White supremacy has been the organizing principle of America since it was founded.”Harris-Perry: Ah, there you go! Put that on the cup!
There you go. What a great idea! Write a blanket condemnation of the United States on every Starbucks cup. Have some hourly employee who puts coffee grounds in a metal thingie and runs hot water through it act as your unrequested, uninvited social awareness mentor, by informing you – whether you want to discuss race or not – that oh, by the way, the United States is a racist country and always has been.
Incidentally, Whitney Dow is a filmmaker who, last year, launched “The Whiteness Project” – essentially to show us all how ignorant and racist White people are…and Melissa Harris-Perry is the genius who asked Attorney General eric holder to “quack like a duck”.
Still wondering why MSNBC is getting its backside handed to it in the ratings? I would hope not.
