HILLARY: TIME TO HIBERNATE?

To hibernate is to go into a state of inactivity.

That is hardly a term I would normally associate with Hillary Clinton.

But given what has happened in the days since her whirlwind media blitz to publicize “Hard Choices”, the new book with her name on it (do you really think she actually wrote this herself?) it seems to be a pretty logical strategy.

The reviews on “Hard Choices” are in.  And they are not good.  Even sources which usually are highly supportive of Ms. Clinton characterize it as plodding, insubstantial and uninformative, with little to recommend it.  Illustratively, the Hillary-loving New York Times\’ reviewer, Peter Baker, calls it “a safe and unchallenging volume, full of bromides and talking points.”

At Amazon.com, in this first month of release – when all hell should be breaking loose sales-wise –  “Hard Choices” isn\’t even in the top 50 (as I write, it is #61 overall).

Now add in several major gaffes Ms. Clinton has made during interviews about the book – the most notable, and probably long-lasting, being her claim that she and hubby Bubba were “dead broke” upon leaving the White House (we all should be so “dead broke”).

And don\’t forget the 39 year old taped interview, unearthed by Alana Goodman at Washington Free Beacon, in which a laughing, eminently unconcerned Clinton described her “success” in getting the rapist of a 12 year old girl off…while making it clear that she knew her client was guilty.  No remorse, no sympathy for the victim, only gleeful triumph over her legal “success”.

Suppose you are Hillary Clinton, and this is how your last week looked. Would you be out there, fully available to any media venue which asked, to revel in the glory of your great success?  Or would you find reasons/excuses/anything at all  to make yourself very, very unavailable to those media, so they would not be asking you questions about your post-White House finances, the rape case (FYI – the victim, now 52 years of age, said it destroyed her life), or explain why a book which the publisher projected to sell 1,000,000 copies is unlikely to come even remotely close to that figure?

Personally,  if I were an ambitious woman with no scruples, I would consider a temporary state of hibernation – after which I would emerge; and if anyone asked about the rape case, and my obvious indifference to the 12 year old female victim, I would say “Hey, that was a long time ago.  What difference, at this point, does it make?”

Is that what Hillary Clinton will do?

Don\’t put it past her.  Don\’t put anything past Hillary Clinton.
