TRUMP: A FATAL DEMOCRAT DIVERSION?

Since Barack Obama took office in 2009, Democrats, as a party, have taken a hit of huge proportions.

From holding the presidency, 60% majorities in both houses of congress and a 58% majority of Governors, they have lost the presidency and every one of those majorities.

So what are they doing about it?  Are they addressing the reasons for this quite possibly unprecedented free-fall, or are they diverting the necessity for dealing with those reasons in favor of obsessively trying to discredit and unseat President Trump?

John Hinderaker, at powerlineblog.com, thinks it is the latter.  And his latest piece very persuasively explains why.

Mr. Hinderaker puts up a map to show just how daunting the Democrat situation is:

Take a good look at those colors.  Red = Republican control of both the Governorship and legislature, Blue = Democrat control.

It’s hard not to see the extent of the problem.

Then Mr. Hinderaker provides his analysis of what Democrats should/should not do to get back into the game.  By all means, use the link and read it all – but this is the key paragrapsh:

Those who run the Democratic Party spend their time overwhelmingly in Washington, California and New York, and they read the New York Times and the Washington Post. They watch CNN and MSNBC, along with network news. As a result, I am not sure they are fully attuned to how unpopular their party has become in most of America. They may win a tactical victory against President Trump, whose inexperience and personality make him vulnerable. But I suspect that very few voters are responding to the Democrats’ daily assault on the administration by saying, In the next election I am going to change my mind and vote liberal! On the contrary, it may be that the Democrats’ hysterical, unprecedented assault on the president will prove to be a distraction that actually retards their ability to address their party’s long-term decline.

Does Hinderaker include a couple of harsh, probably unfair, generalizations about Democrat leaders?  Yes he does.

But does Hinderaker have a point – an extremely important one – about what should be on Democrats’ minds right now?  Yes he does.

Unless something very big happens that we have no inkling of today, there is no way Democrats can convict Donald Trump.  If they win a house majority next year (a realistic possibility) they might be able to impeach him.  But conviction requres a 2/3 senate majority.

Not only are Democrats 19 votes short right now, but with 26 of the 34 senate seats up for grabs next year currently held by Democrats – 10 of them in states Trump won last year – it’s an odds-on bet they will be even further from a 2/3 majority next year.

So they can either continue this going-n owhere wild goose chase, or they can at least try to undo the damage their leftward lurch during the Obama years wreaked on their national standing.

I have often written here about how dumb Republicans can be.  If Democrats continue in this direction, they’re going to make Republicans look good by comparison.
