Today’s quote comes to us from Senator Mark Warner (D-VA).
It relates to the avidly Trump-hating Washington Post publishing transcripts of Mr. Trump’s phone conversations with President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia.
Senator Warner, who is the ranking Democrat member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said this:
“A president of the United States, a governor would tell us they’ve got to be able to have confidential conversations, and I think it was disgraceful that those [came out]. Whether that is Intel or Judicial [committees] looking into it, somebody ought to.”
The first point to make is that Senator Warner is 100% correct. Leaks such as these, which compromise a president’s ability to talk candidly with other heads of state, literally endangers the safety of our country.
My only complaint is that it doesn’t go far enough. The person or persons who leaked these transcripts to the Washington Post – which disgraces itself by publishing them – should suffer the severest consequences allowed by law.
The next point to make is that – this is a terrible commentary on what his party has degenerated into – Mr. Warner’s is the one and only Democrat voice I am aware of speaking out against publication of these transcripts.
It is a sad day when speaking out against publication of such material sets a United States Senator apart from the rest of his political party. Doing so should be an obvious reaction, not an act of courage.
But in today’s Democrat Party, it is an act of courage. And that is why Mark Warner wins today’s Quote Of The Day honors.
