ELLIOT RODGERS AND OFFICER KRUPKE

Thetrouble is he\’s lazy, the trouble is he drinks
The trouble is he\’scrazy, the trouble is he stinks
The trouble is he\’s growing, thetrouble is he\’s grown
Krupke, we\’ve got troubles of our own

Those lyrics are from “Gee, Officer Krupke”; a very amusing (in a black humorish sort of way) song from West Side Story.  But how amusing are they in the context of what happened at Santa Barbara last week?

eliott rodgers, a sicker-than-sick 22 year old, stabbed three of his roommates to death, then shot three other people dead, wounded some number of additional people, and shot himself to death.

Ever since then, we have heard explanation after explanation of why this happened. The list is still growing.   Do they remind you of those intentionally absurd lyrics as much as they remind me of them?

What ever happened to personal responsibility?  Is it no longer in fashion?  Will it be coming back next year?

The trouble is the NRA.  The trouble is White privilege.  The trouble is Hollywood.  The trouble is a breakdown in social services….

No, no, no.  The trouble, before any of those other things are even considered, is elliot rodgers.

If we aren\’t starting there, we are starting in the wrong place.

Remember how the West Side Story song ends?

Gee,Officer Krupke
What are we to do?
Gee, Officer Krupke
Krupyou!

Sad to say, that ending has more than a little relevance here as well.
