Today’s quote comes to us from current, soon to be ex, President Barack Obama.
Here is Mr. Obama’s analysis of why Democrats lost in 2016:
“In this election, [they] turned out in huge numbers for Trump. And I think that part of it has to do with our inability, our failure, to reach those voters effectively. Part of it is Fox News in every bar and restaurant in big chunks of the country, but part of it is also Democrats not working at a grassroots level, being in there, showing up, making arguments. That part of the critique of the Democratic Party is accurate. We spend a lot of time focused on international policy and national policy and less time being on the ground. And when we’re on the ground, we do well. This is why I won Iowa.”
Now that is truly stunning.
The first reason Mr. Obama cites? Why…people who go to bars might watch the one cable news show that did anything but attack Trump throughout the entire campaign. In other words, it wasn’t the clean sweep of pro-Hillary “news” she was entitled to.
And then there is not going to the grassroots, where “we do well. This is why I won Iowa”.
Here’s the news, Mr. President: People at the grassroots level voted for Trump not just because he talked to them more than Democrats did, but because he SAID things THEY WANTED TO HEAR more than Democrats did.
Here’s are a few questions for you, sir: if you were, say, a 40 year old woman from Akron, Ohio, with two children she hopes to put through college in a few years and a husband who works in a factory:
-What do you think her concerns are? -Do you think she’s with you on wholesale illegal immigration of people who will compete with her husband for jobs?
-Do you think she’s with you on international trade agreements that have resulted in jobs flying out of the country?
-Do you think she is going to forget those concerns, forget that Donald Trump is talking about secure borders and protecting domestic jobs, and vote for Hillary Clinton because she’s a woman? Because she has the same plumbing?
The answers to those questions are why Donald Trump won, Mr. President. Not because of what might be on a TV screen in a bar.
But look at the bright side: you do win Quote Of The Day honors — for demonstrating exactly the level of obtuseness that put your party into this situation…and, if your successors have the same ideas, will keep it there.
Oh, one other thing: given that, with you as President, Democrats lost their backsides in every part of government, both congressional and statewide, what makes you think you are capable of telling them how to turn things around? The biggest loss Democrats have had in decades, is the fact that YOU won.
