President Trump has congratulated recep tayyip erdogan of Turkey on his successful referendum – the one which turns parliament into an ornament and effectively crowns erdogan a hugo-chavezian dictator.
Is this just a severe symptom of ignorance, or has erdogan managed to embed a few members of his staff in the Trump administration?
Whatever the reason, congratulations should absolutely, unequivocally should not have been extended.
This is a major blunder by Donald Trump – one which, I strongly suspect, was self-inflicted: i.e. done without consulting the people around him.
Regardless of the reason it happened, President Trump better get control of himself fast. Trump better remember that he is not operating as a big-shot businessman but as the leader of the free world. Trump better seek out, and listen to, the advice of people he himself brought in, because they know far more about this than he does.
In foreign affairs, ignorance is not bliss. It is damn stupid and completely unnecessary.
