What does it tell you?
It tells you that, despite all the bluster and the threats, China knows as well as Trump does that a tariff deal has to be made. Why? Because China stands to lose a ton more than we do if it isn’t made.
So China’s President Xi Jinping will, no doubt, engage in a few face-saving for-show pronouncements. And then he will come to the table and deal. Because China loses too much if he doesn’t.
And you can be sure this reality is not being lost on other countries around the world as well – very much including our European “allies”, who, like Canada, are happy to tolerate us as long as they get the far longer end of the stick when it comes to trade. They will have to do the same, for the same reason.
Today is May 3. And Democrats are still telling whoever will listen that the Trump tariff strategy is a complete bust which is going to put us in recession and raise prices through the roof.
Let’s talk on July 3, two months from now (though it may come sooner) and see how Trump’s tariff strategy is doing. If it turns out the Democrat talking points are correct I assure you I will say so. But if they aren’t, you can be equally sure that I – maybe not them, but I – will be saying that instead.
