It’s only the end of January. And this, after all, is CNN. So the potential for even stupider material is there.
But this is 2018’s winner so far: last night’s commentary by Wolf Blitzer, Kate Bennett and Jake Tapper about Melania Trump’s dress, her travel accommodations to and from the State of the Union address, and what it is supposed to mean to President Trump:
WOLF BLITZER: First lady, there she is, Melania Trump walking down the stairs. Let me bring Jake and Kate in. Kate, first of all, you’ve been reporting she did come up separately from the President.
KATE BENNETT: That’s correct. She did drive up separately this evening from the White House to the capitol. She accompanied the guests that were invited to sit in her box tonight. We do hear from the White House, however Wolf, they will be driving home together. The President and the First Lady will share the ride home. But it is, again, bucking tradition that she drove up on her own.
JAKE TAPPER: Is there anything you want to tell us about her outfit?
BENNETT: You know, she’s wearing a cream-colored suit there, which I find interesting. Remember last year the female Democratic Senators all wore white. A bunch of them to protest Trump’s policies against women. So there was even a hashtag, “#WomenWearWhite.” Listen, it could be a total coincidence, but I just find a lot of the stuff she does these days, to look at it twice.
TAPPER: I think Maureen Dowd called her the “Slovenian Sphinx,” everybody looking at her and trying to decipher the mysteries.
BENNETT: Exactly, very mysterious.
Earlier I called this stupid. In looking at it again, I realize that I understated. This is stupid on steroids, with afterburners.
Let’s take each “point”, one by one:
-Ms. Trump rode to the speech with her guests and came home with her husband. SO WHAT? Did it occur to CNN’s version of Moe, Larry and Curly that Mr. Trump was leaving his wife to her guests while he looked over his speech before making it? Or that the fact that they went back to the White House together just might make this a non-issue?
-The fact that she wore a white (off-white, actually) dress means that she is standing with Democrat women against her husband? WHY? Because, last year, Democrat women wore white (which most did not wear this year?) They haven’t found a word to describe the stupidity level of that one.
-And Trump hating Maureen Dowd called her a “Slovenian Sphinx” means exactly what? I dare you to come up with something.
Stupidity, thy name is CNN.
Oh, one more thing: CNN still calls itself “the most trusted name in news”. And I agree – in that, these days, this is exactly the kind of incredibly stupid garbage CNN can be trusted to disgorge.
Did someone remove this network’s embarrassment chip?
