I\’ll make this short and to the point.
Ted Cruz is correct to say he is a legal citizen of the United States. He clearly meets US criteria. The latest authority to affirm his status is Floyd Abrams, a constitutional scholar…and nobody\’s idea of a right wing operative, I assure you.
But Donald Trump is also correct to say his citizenship will be challenged. In fact, Alan Grayson, who has made a career of buffoonery in the House of Representatives, said he himself would make sure the papers are filed.
Cruz\’s dilemma is that, if he seeks a judgment on the matter, he communicates to voters that he agrees it is in doubt. Which means that they should consider the matter in doubt as well. And the longer Grayson and other likeminded Democrats can keep that issue going, the more it would hurt Cruz in an election (what if we vote for him and it turns out he\’s not legally the President?).
How will this play out? No one knows, of course. But it is only relevant if Mr. Cruz becomes the presidential nominee…..which is another reason I hope he doesn\’t become the presidential nominee.
