TED CRUZ\’S “APOLOGY” TO NEW YORK

Ken Berwitz

I hate being put in theposition of taking sides in a dust-up between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump – two peoplewhom, for very different reasons, I will not cast my vote for.  But that is the position I am in.

Ted Cruz made a fool of himself by attacking Donald Trump, on the grounds that “Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values”.

I don\’t care whether you think the general trend of New York is to have values you do or do not like, that is a stupid generalization which tars all New Yorkers no matter who they are – in the same general ballpark of what a KKKer would say about Black people, an Israel-hater would say about Jews or a Catholic basher would say about Rome.

Trump, who – politics aside – is no one\’s fool, embarrassed Cruz so completely when answering his comment, that Cruz actually had to applaud his own take-down.  Pathetic.

But Ted Cruz is nothing if not persistent.  And, in that connection, he has now issued a written “apology” to New Yorkers for what he said.

Here it is – in blue, with my comments in rust:

Hillary Clinton and Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio have alldemanded an apology. I\’m happy to apologize.  Do you really think that only high-profile left-wing icons were offended?  I would hope you know better…but you give me no reason to be confident.:

I apologize to the millions of New Yorkers who have been letdown by liberal politicians in that state. OK, this tells us straight off that Cruz is either unwilling to or incapable of offering any real apology.  Ironically, it shows that, in at least onearea, Cruz and Trump are about the same: humility level.

I apologize to the hard working men and women of the stateof New York who have been denied jobs because Governor Cuomo won\’t allowfracking. Even though there had been many high paying jobs just south inPennsylvania, New Yorkers are denied the ability to provide for their families.  There are two sides to this story – the oneCruz rejects, being concern over the effect of fracking on the environment; particularly water.  But I agree he makes a fair pointhere.

I apologize to all the pro-life and pro-marriage andpro-second amendment New Yorkers who were told by Governor Cuomo that they haveno place in New York because that\’s not who New Yorkers are.  I acknowledge that Andrew Cuomo is no stranger to sanctimony andobnoxious commentary.  But if he meantthat New York can do without people who insist that their views/beliefs beforced on everyone else, I can\’t say I blame him.

I apologize to all the small businesses who have been drivenout of New York city by crushing taxes and regulations.  What is the point of this comment?  It ignores that Governor Cuomo has done some seriouswork to alleviate high taxation..buteven with high taxes and complexregulations, New York remains a world class financial, business and industrialhub. There has to be a reason why…and it isn\’t because New York has deficientvalues.

I apologize to the millions of unborn children, manyAfrican-American and Hispanic, whose lives have been taken by politicians whorelentlessly promote abortion on demand with no limitations.  Regardless of anyone\’s position on abortion, howis this a “New York value”?  Does Ted Cruz think abortions are only performed in New York?  That support for reproductive rights only exists in New York?  That is childishand absurd.

I apologize to all of the African-American children whoMayor de Blasio tried to throw out of their charter schools that were providinga lifeline to the American Dream.  Onthis one we agree.

I apologize to the people of New York who are offended whenthe New York Daily News lambastes anyone who prays for victims of violence.  The New York Daily News may have degenerated into a slime-bucket newspaper.  But when did it become aspokes-entity for the city or state of New York?  Memo to Ted Cruz:  the conservative-leaning New York Post alsois in New York.  So is NationalReview.  Your “point”, therefore, is no point at all.

I apologize to the people of faith who are ridiculed andinsulted by the New York media.  Again,we have Ted Cruz equating every New Yorker with some (not by any means all)of its media.  Ludicrous to the nth degree.

One other thing:  in case Ted Cruz has not noticed, the state he represents, Texas has a decidedly left-leaning capital city.  Austin. Does he ever talk about “Austin values”?  And if not, why not?

As a native New Yorker, I am resisting the urge to tell Ted Cruz that he can take his “New York Values” narrative and stick it right up his Mosholu Parkway.  But my level of propriety is preventing me from doing so..,

…by a hair.

For the moment, I\’ll just suggest Mr. Cruz stick to lecturing us that we should forgo our freedoms and live the way he thinks we should, and leave The Big Apple out of it.
