Uh oh. A reliably left-of-center major newspaper has decided to put journalism over propaganda. And, it would seem, a great many of its readers are outraged.
Here, as pulled from John Sexton’s article for hotair.com, is a key part of The Washington Post’s editorial on the government shutdown (the bold print is mine):
Schumer has allowed the shutdown to drag on because he’s worried about fending off a primary challenger in 2028, and he’s still smarting from blowback he got from angry liberals after he agreed to fund the government this spring. Electoral wins can offer a pretext to claim vindication, or at least quietly give permission for a few of his members to break ranks…
…It is wrong that Democrats have held the government hostage for a month in hopes of extending costly Obamacare subsidies, just as it was for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to shut down the government in 2013 for 16 days in a bid to defund the Affordable Care Act altogether.
Negotiations can always fall apart, but the calendar could help: Both chambers are supposed to be out on recess the week after next for Veterans Day, which might help induce a deal by next Friday.
The right answer is to reopen the government with a clean funding bill, ideally for a full year, to get food stamps flowing and federal workers back in the office, and then have a debate about ACA subsidies. Democrats openly acknowledge that they refuse to do this because it would mean giving up their leverage. If they persist, it could mean families start to go hungry.
That, as you can see, is not an attack on the system or on both political parties. It is a clear-as-glass statement that Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, are the cause of this shutdown, that the shutdown is a political ploy, and that its consequences for everyday citizens will be serious.
Mr. Sexton’s article goes on to provide dozens of comments by furious readers, denouncing The Post putting the shutdown blame on Democrats, not Republicans…despite the fact that it is Democrats who are shutting government down, with a number of them telling us in so many words that they are using it as an act of political leverage.
I wonder how many subscribers The Washington Post will lose for daring to tell the truth about what Democrats are doing and why they are doing it. The left is not very forgiving when one of its key icons provides both sides of the story.
But, from my perspective, I congratulate the The Post. Why? For doing nothing other than telling the truth about what is happening.
How sad that doing so should be recognized as some special act, instead of simply expected, as a matter of course, from a supposedly neutral news source.
But, hey, if the Washington Post can break ranks and do this, who knows what’s next?
Maybe MSNBC, under its new name of MS-NOW, will actually do a feature on how many wars President Trump has been instrumental in shutting down.
Gasp!!!
