When a vacuum is created, something will fill it.
When a political vacuum is created, a politician will fill it.
And when a vacuous political vacuum is created – i.e. the drop in Donald Trump\’s fortunes, after demonstrating he is not some invincible force, but a barroom loudmouth type who couldn\’t beat Ted Cruz in Iowa, the politician who seems to quickly be filling Trump\’s empty air space (and boy does he create a lot of it) is Marco Rubio.
I have little doubt that Trump is still in the lead nationally, but Iowa, I suspect, has dropped him a good distance of the way back to earth. By contrast, it appears that Marco Rubio, with his far better than expected showing (if you believed the pre-primary polls), is quickly jumping forward. One look at the number of congresspeople suddenly endorsing him makes that clear.
From a personal perspective, while I have major problems with Marco Rubio on social issues, he is the only one of these three I could vote for. So I consider this very good news.
New Hampshire may tell us a very different story, of course. But, for now, things are starting to look up.
