Congratulations to the dumbass wing of the Republican Party. It has prevailed again.
Excerpted from Kyle Cheney’s article at politico.com:
A panel drafting the Republican Party’s platform on Monday rejected a push to moderate the party’s stance on same-sex marriage, voting sharply against a proposal that backers said would attract LGBT voters into the GOP tent.
“I’m not here asking you to endorse my own constitutional rights … I’m only asking you to recognize that many Republicans, many of the Republicans that sent us here to do work this week in shaping our party’s platform, agree with me, and we should not be excluded from our party,” said Rachel Hoff, a openly gay delegate from Washington, D.C., at a meeting of the GOP Platform Committee here.
Hoff rattled off statistics suggesting sharply changing views on marriage among young Republicans. “If our party wants a future, we should be mindful of these statistics, and we must evolve,” she said.
Hoff’s voice wavered as she described her hope to be accepted by the party “when I’m ready to marry the woman I love.”
How dense can these sexual/intellectual luddites be? Who knows – there doesn’t appear to be a lower limit.
Here is the Republican platform statement from 2012 – the one it apparently is going to keep as-is:
“We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage. We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity.”
Yep, that should warm the heart of any gay voter.
Not content with simply stating “We believe that marriage means one man-one woman – while acknowledging that others may feel differently, and respecting their beliefs”…
…Republicans are saying “We insist that the way we see marriage must be a national standard, legally enforced, so that if you do not share our views, tough crap; you have to live the way we think you should anyway.”
Dumbasses. Plain and simple.
I wonder how many votes they will lose over this – not just from gay people, but also from straight people who despise such mindless, unnecessary intolerance?
Well, at least they’ll know they earned every one of those lost votes.
