Jerry Seinfeld was famed for inventing the concept of “a show about nothing”*
Well, Variety magazine has decided to provide us with its version of this concept: a “lifetime achievement award about nothing”.
From Emily Zanotti’s article at heatstreet.com:
Next month, Variety magazine will host its annual “Women in Power” luncheon, where it will pass out honors and awards to several lucky ladies who have dedicated their lives to the service of others.
This year, for no apparent reason, Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, will get a one of those awards for her service to…well, that part’s not quite clear.
But she’ll be honored for her achievement anyway.
Chelsea Clinton, it says, is vice chair of the Clinton Foundation. A foundation she only works for because her parents founded it to keep their wealth flowing in the years they don’t spend running for public office. But it helps children.
Chelsea’s many other endeavors—authoring books that don’t sell, being snarky on Twitter, and serving on the board of several large-scale tech firms, operated by major Democratic donors—were oddly left out of her official biography.
Variety will never outdo the Nobel Prize committee for the most idiotic award. It nominated Barack Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize exactly 11 days after he took office, therefore based on absolutely nothing, and handed it to him less than 9 months later – a decision it later regretted (sorry, no do-overs, guys).
But credit where credit is due: this comes close.
I wonder if she’s up for the Nobel Peace Prize too….

* FYI: Jerry Seinfeld’s show – one can argue that it is more Larry David’s than his – may have been about nothing. But, as anyone who ever watched Abbott And Costello or The Adventures Of Ozzie and Harriet (among others) can tell you, it is far, far from the first.

Variety will also confer on Chelsea Clinton the
‘Lifetime Paris Hilton Award’
for ‘Being Famous for Being Famous’.
In addition, for her activities with the Clinton Foundation,
Chelsea Clinton will receive the ‘Bernie Madoff Award’ for public service.
