Every time I drive into Freehold, New Jersey and see Mexican laborers standing in the 6-12 convenience store parking lot on Broad Street, or in front of Rita’s on Main Street, waiting – hoping – praying – that someone will drive up and offer them a day’s work, with no benefits, no social safety net and no recourse if they’re stiffed by their “employer”…
…I think about how badly they must be treated in Mexico to prefer living this way over staying in their own country with full citizenship rights.
Then I think about the fact that Mexico is not a poor country; it has vast natural resources, major industrial and agricultural sectors and a thriving tourist industry.
And then I wonder why the same media and immigration activists, neither of which have any problem talking about how the United States is mistreating these people, never have a word of criticism for the country they fled.
