A “WHY WE NEED CHARTER SCHOOLS” STORY

Suppose….

-you were going to a school – a low-performing school loaded with gang members – where a violent fight broke out in class between two student,

-as tables and chairs were knocked over, one student eventually wound up on top of the other and was beating on him,

-the teacher told them to stop and was ignored,

-she could not call security because the walkie-talkie she was issued did not work.

-so, out of other options, she picked up a broom and hit the student who was on top with it until he stopped (the student was not seriously hurt),

-which stopped the fight temporarily, but then the two went back at it and did not stop until another student somehow managed to break it up,

-and, as a result, the students each got 10 day suspensions,

-but the teacher was fired, effective immediately – and may be charged with child abuse.

Now, suppose that you were a student who wanted to learn something and escape that environment…or the parent of such a student.  Would you want there to be a charter school nearby?  Or a voucher system in place which would enable motivated students to attend a non-charter private school?

I\’m guessing the answer would be an emphatic “yes”.

Ok, time to stop supposing.  Please read about this actual event, which occurred in a Detroit High School, which includes a video of the fight itself.  Click here, and prepare to be appalled.

Oh, one other thing:  When asked whether he thought this was his fault, here is what the student who was on top, beating the $#|+ out of his classmate, had to say, exactly as he said it:

“No,I don\’t feel like it\’s my fault. She is my favorite teacher. Ithink it could have went the other way around, she could have calledfor the security, waited for the security to get there, but she ain\’twait so, I think that who she deserve”

Now there\’s a young man with a wonderful future…..maybe in Detroit\’s academic community:  hey, he could replace the fired teacher – or become a judge in the city\’s family court, specializing in child abuse cases.
