Quite a few years ago, our older son had a friend, named Seth, who lived around the corner. They were never as close as their parents were (my wife and I saw his folks just last night, as a matter of fact), but they were friends, nonetheless.
One day the two of them bopped into the house, and were hungry. Seth asked my son whether there was anything to eat. My son said “sure, let\’s look”.
They bypassed the snacks, the cold cuts, and even the (not inexpensive) steaks. Instead, they decided on veal cutlets – which were at least double the price of anything else in our freezer. Then, without a second thought, they cooked and ate every one of them.
Seth was home free – he was just a guest. But our son, I assure you, was not. (Quick note: shortly thereafter, my wife and I learned about how the young calves were treated and “processed”. We never ate veal again – it has been over 25 years. For the same reason, I have not eaten cows, pigs or sheep for almost as long – next month will be my 20th anniversary.)
Anyway, eventually both boys went their separate ways, school and career-wise.
I avoid talking about the personal lives of our children – other than bragging about our grandchildren, of course. But leave it suffice to say that we could not be prouder of how they both turned out.
As for Seth? He went to the Newhouse school at Syracuse, found his way into sports (one of his great lifetime loves, along with comic books), became a pretty solid sports announcer/commentator…
…and, just this weekend, it was announced that the New York Mets have brought Seth Everett on board to do their pre-game and post game shows this year – as, we hope, he continues to do for many years to come.
Congratulations Seth! Not that you need us to tell you this, but your mom and dad (and, of course, we) are tremendously proud of you.
Funny thing, though: your parents think you got the gig because you\’re a talented, knowledgeable, engaging sports personality.
We think it was the veal cutlets.
