We recognize and honorthe courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheldas the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote throughlaws governing marriage. We embrace theprinciple that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity.
And this one:
As you can see, a majority of Democrats feel gay marriageshould be a legal right. That probably does not surprise you.
But look at Independents and look atRepublicans. A large majority of Independents agree that gay marriageshould be legally valid. And now, 37% of Republicans do as well – up from22% in 2012.
So with a majority of the country, amajority of Independents (who almost certainly will elect or not elect the nextPresident) – and a large, zooming-upward minority of Republicans as well, supporting gay marriage…
…isn\’t it time that the wording ofthat platform be changed?
Isn\’t it time for revised wording, which says that while the Republican Party believes in traditional one man-one womanmarriage, it also recognizes that people of good will feel same-sex marriage isacceptable as well, that Republicans respect their views, welcome them in theparty, and hope they will consider all Republican positions, not just thisone, when deciding who to vote for?
Isn\’t it time that the overt threat tomake laws banning same sex marriage be removed from the Republican platform?
This is not to say that Republicans who believe only in one man/one woman marriage should compromise their views. It is to say that they should recognize and respect that there are other views as well, and not drive people who have those other views away.
I\’d say that\’s worth thinking about. ASAP. How about you?
