Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is as rough and tough a politician as you can find. He is capable of fighting his way through just about anything.
But this may be the one he can\’t fight through.
According to Michael Tarm, Tammy Webber and Sophia Tareen\’s article in the Associated Press, emails have been uncovered showing that Mayor Emanuel\’s office colluded with the police and investigators on the Laquan McDonald case to coordinate their response to McDonald\’s being shot and killed in 2014,
This was presumably done to make sure that the information, especially the video which appears to show him being shot (16 times) while not posing any imminent threat to the officers – remained out of the public\’s view until after Emanuel won his primary and was re-elected as Mayor.
Since the video was finally released in November, there have been ongoing protests and demands for Emanuel to resign. This latest news is a virtual guarantee that they will continue, they will grow…and that the protesters, who have largely been Black activists to date, will now expand in size and diversity.
Rahm Emanuel\’s situation was tenuous before release of this information. But now it may be impossible.
Can he hold on to his Mayoralty? I\’m not sure he can…and I\’m not sure he should.
Either way this goes will not surprise me.
