How much does it take to make graham platner persona non grata as Maine’s Democrat senate candidate?
So far it hasn’t been enough that platner is a self described socialist, communist, had a nazi tattoo and is a serial woman-abuser. Nope, Democrats have still rallied around him.
But now there may be more.
From Benjamin Kail’s article for the Bangor, Maine Daily News:
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has postponed a string of events Sunday and Monday as rumors circulate among Maine Democrats and over social media about another potentially damaging story to come about the oyster farmer’s past.
Platner postponed a planned town hall in Augusta on Sunday after reportedly missing a Fourth of July parade in Machias. The Gorham Democrats on Monday morning said a town hall set for Monday was postponed because Platner was “not feeling well.” And a Sanford town hall previously listed on Mobilize was later taken down.
The Platner campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the events. The postponements came as multiple Democrats told the Bangor Daily News they expected a national outlet to drop a story about Platner Monday or Tuesday.
If what we already know about platner wasn’t enough for Democrats to dump him, what the eff would do it? Obviously it would have to be pretty raw.
And here’s something else it would be: it would be an opportunity for Democrats like Schumer and Jeffries to extricate themselves from their support of platner. It would be their opportunity to say “hey, we tried to stand by him, but this is the last straw” and get out from under.
However…
…even if they did so, unless platner resigns his candidacy (which I doubt he will do), he’s still Maine’s senate candidate. He’s still their candidate. And even if he did resign his candidacy, who would replace him?
If this isn’t the definition of an unholy mess, what is?
