THE SWALWELL “SUSPENSION”

Here, posted yesterday evening on X (twitter), is a statement from Rep. eric swalwell, the congressperson from California who was running to succeed Gavin Newsom as Governor of California:

I am suspending my campaign for Governor.

To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past.

I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.

Suspend?  Interesting use of the word.  Ususally to suspend something means you are at least somewhat likely to continue doing it at a later date.

But given that just about every Democrat who means anything has demanded he get out, and much (most?) of his staff has resigned, I think swalwell’s gubernatorial run is a tad more than suspended.  Maybe that was a typo, and he meant to say “upended”.

It should also be noted that a number of Democrats are not satisfied with him dropping out of the Governor race, they want him to resign from congress as well (no problem for the party holding his seat;  he’s in a safer-than-safe congressional district which Democrats regularly win with more than 2/3 of the vote.)

Personally, I hope swalwell does resign from congress, on the grounds that just about any alternative is likely to be a far better human being.

And I wonder how long it will be before we find out his marriage has been “suspended” as well….
