For the short run, witholding of funds for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) people who move people through airports – appears to be at an end.
Last night the senate voted unanimously for DHS/TSA funding and the House is expected to move it right through today.
Funny thing: it happened within hours of President Trump declaring the impasse a national security issue and informing congress that, with or without them, he was going to sign an executive order requiring the funding.
Gee, d’ya think that had something to do with it?
In any event, it appears virtually certain that the house will follow the senate, TSA will be funded and its members fully paid.
Senate Minority Leader chuck schumer, incredibly but not surprisingly, is claiming that this is a victory for Democrats. His exact words:
“Democrats held firm in our opposition that Donald Trump’s rogue and deadly militia (referring to ICE) should not get more funding without serious reforms, and we will continue to fight for those.”
Forgetting for just a moment schumer’s outrageous, disgraceful characterization of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the fact is that ICE is already fully funded through next year. For them, the legislation changes nothing.
But this is chuck schumer talking to Democrats…and, as per usual, treating them like a bunch of mindless SIPS who will buy whatever he is selling (sad that, in a great many cases, his assumption is correct).
Bottom line, though, is that it looks for all the world like the withholding of pay for TSA agents will end today.
Now, how do we get back the agents who quit because they couldn’t afford to work for nothing? See if schumer can give you a snappy answer for that one.
