A quick summary:
Iran has been hit hard and decisively. Much of its leadership, including its “supreme leader” khamenei, is dead. Much of its military capability is incapacitated.
Not surprisingly, while it still has the assets to do so, Iran has shot as many missiles as it could into Israel, and into surrounding Arab countries with U.S. military bases.
The result of hitting those Arab countries is that they are spontaneously supporting the US/Israel. There is speculation that they may even join the military action.
The regime also claims to have closed the Strait of Hormuz – which is a passageway for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply. How capable it is of making that stick, and sustaining any kind of closure, remains to be seen.
It is questionable how long Iran can continue to try retaliating, given the superiority of US/Israeli forces and the damage they are wreaking on Iran’s military assets.
People across Iran are celebrating the US/Israel military action in the streets. There are also protests against it – which appear to be non-spontaneous/orchestrated by what is left of the khamenei regime. Hard to tell how these protests are going to continue.
The US left is solidly against this war. They are out on the streets already, with signs condemning the US and Israel/demanding that the war end (how did they get those signs printed and distributed in just hours?)
If things turn out badly for us, they will be seen as getting it right and will, obviously, benefit by their positions in the upcoming midterm elections.
If things turn out well for us – as they clearly are so far – they will be seen as getting it wrong and will, obviously, be damaged.
More on this as events unfold.
