Here is the first part of a press release issued by the Skagit County (Wisconsin) Republican Party:
Big Win! Court Rules Wisconsin Elections Commission Must Verify Citizenship of All Voter Registrations
Today, Judge Michael P. Maxwell of the Waukesha County Circuit Court issued a ruling in the case Cerny v. Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) that requires the WEC to verify the U.S. citizenship of ALL voter registration applicants and review existing voter rolls for non-citizens.
The WEC and local officials must fulfill their duties and are barred from registering anyone without verification of US citizenship.
The court also mandated collaboration between the parties to create a plan, utilizing Department of Transportation (DOT) records or other legal methods to identify ineligible registrants. This review must be substantially completed before the next statewide election.
Why would the Republican Party call this a big win? Don’t both parties vigorously advocate for elections in which there are safeguards insuring that only legal voters cast ballots?
The answer is that both parties don’t vigorously advocate for honest elections. Democrats fight against every initiative that would prevent illegal voting from taking place. They fight against Voter ID cards. They fight against citizenship checks. They fight against cleaning up voting rolls.
So: is putting a mechanism in place to make sure only legal voters can vote a big win? It obviously is to Republicans.
Don’t wait up expecting the Democrat Party of Skagit County, Wisconsin…or anywhere else…applauding this ruling.
